This morning’s sketchbook exploration is another scene from Gwenffrd-Dinas. This was back in summer 2018 — what a summer! An initial thumbnail sketch to warm up, then I started exploring colours. I know they say you should mix your own greens, but I’ve already got sap, olive, hooker’s, and leaf green in my paintbox, so I use those anyway. My primary goal with this piece will be to capture the vibrancy of the fresh foliage but also to make sure that the picture has plenty of depth. I’m still weighing up whether to do this in straight watercolour or a pen & wash. I think I’ll return to this at some point to just go over the colours, mix them again and try laying them out. I need to get it right for the final piece.
